Ruský vedec Joseph Javorsky prilieta pracovne do Ameriky, no hneď po príchode je naňho zo strany KGB spáchaný atentát. Ten sa síce nevydarí, no pri úteku pred nebezpečnými agentami sa Joseph dostane do zakázaného vojnového územia, kde práve prebieha skúška atómovej bomby. Výbuch a následujúca radioaktivita z neho spravia vraždiacu beštiu. A keď sa v okolí nájde prvá obeť, vyberá sa po stopách "atómovej obludy" elitný mariňák Jim Archer.
