Newyorský playboy Charlie Hill (Fred Astaire) si na přelomu 19. a 20. století užívá života, jak jen to jde. Jednoho dne se však tento floutek, který se nechá vyživovat svojí bohatou tetičkou, zamiluje do Angely Bonfils (Vera-Ellen), přitažlivé příslušnice Armády spásy. Charlie se rozhodne od základu změnit svůj život a začít poctivě pracovat.
