Ringo Starr zformoval svůj první All Starr Band v roce 1989 ze svých dobrých přátel, naladěných na stejnou hudební notu, dal dohromady pohodové přátelské seskupení lidí se stejnými muzikantskými preferencemi – fanoušky rock’n’rollu. Už v létě tohoto roku společně poprvé vystoupili v The Greek Theatre v Kalifornii. Dále mimo jiné v roce 1992 na slavném Montreux Jazz Festivalu ve Švýcarsku, ve stejném roce se zastavili i v Liverpoolu v Anglii. 1995 vystoupili v Japonsku a 1997 v Pine Knob ve státě Michigan. Jako host se jednou přidal Paul McCartney. Některé zahrané písně jsou autorským počinem Ringa, ale většinou zazní úplná klasika: Yellow Submarine, dále např. hit skupiny Cream Sunshine of Your Love, skladba Groovin‘ od The Young Rascals a další pohodové pecky.
