Uprostred divokých a tajomných lesov Írska 8. storočnia n.l. stojí osamotené opátstvo. Za jeho vysokými múrmi žije spolu s mníchmi 12-ročný Brendan, synovec opáta Cellacha. Brendan má prísny zákaz opustiť múry kláštora, pretože les naokolo je nebezpečný, plný pradávnych keltských tajomstiev a Írsko žije v hrôze pred krutými vikingskými nájazdníkmi. Jedného dňa zabúcha na bránu opátstva brat Aidan so vzácnym manuskriptom Knihy Kellov – svetlom poznania, kultúry a viery v temnej dobe, ktorá musí byť čo najskôr dokončená. Brendan sa ukáže ako zručný iluminátor a napriek zákazu sa vyberá do prastarého lesa, aby získal vzácne žalude na výrobu atramentu. V lese stretá vílie dievčatko Aisling, napoly bielu vlčicu a napoly človeka. Obaja v sebe musia nájsť veľkú odvahu a odhodlanie, pretože v lese sa ukrýva temnota a vikingovia sú už blízko…
