Z potápajúcej sa lode sa zachránia len štyria muži, jedna žena a dieťa. Znenazdajky sa ocitnú v ponorke kapitána Mema. Spočiatku sú šťastní, že sa zachránili, nadšene ďakujú za svoje životy. Osobne sa kapitánovi ide poďakovať senátor Robert Fraser, kapitána však absolútne nezaujíma vďačnosť akejsi vlády za záchranu akéhosi senátora. Radosť zachránených ľudí pominie bleskurýchlo vo chvíli, keď sa dozvedia, že už nikdy neuvidia zemský povrch. Podľa slov kapitána sa musia prichystať na vstup do nového života. Odo dňa, kedy vstúpili na palubu ponorky Nautilis, sa totiž stali doživotnými väzňami prapodivného kapitána Mema a nedobrovoľnými obyvateľmi zlatého podmorského mesta Templemer, z ktorého ako sa zdá niet žiadneho úniku…
