Hlas Amazonky rozpráva o boji medzi tými, čo chcú uchrániť unikátny ekosystém dažďového lesa a tými, čo ho chcú vyťažiť. Príbeh je rozprávaný prostredníctvom života a myšlienok odvážneho a neústupného brazílskeho ekologického aktivistu menom Chico Mendes, ktorý odporoval ľuďom a inštitúciám zodpovedným za devastáciu pralesa. Mendes získal miestnu aj medzinárodnú podporu pre svoju predstavu o ekologickom trvalo udržovateľnom hospodárení, a urobil si tým aj veľa nepriateľov. V decembri 1988 sa stal obeťou sprisahania. Chico Mendes sa po svojej smrti stal brazílskym národným hrdinom.
