Jediným svedkom vraždy svojho otca v prístave pre nákladné lode Elliott Bay v Seatlle je osemročný Luke. Po traumatickom zážitku však zostávajú jeho spomienky ukryté hlboko v jeho vystrašenej mysli, napriek snahám vyšetrovateľov odhaliť otcovho vraha. Detektív Thurston si prizve na pomoc psychologičku, doktorku Jackie Hollisovú, aby pomohla Lukeovi rozpomenúť sa na strašnú noc. Jackie si pomaly získava chlapcovu dôveru a začína odhaľovať mučivý príbeh. Musí pritom čeliť netrpezlivému detektívovi, ktorý by chcel urýchliť bolestivý proces. Z počiatočných treníc vyšľahne iskra vzájomnej náklonnosti, ktorá prerastá do vášnivého vzťahu. Musia však zahynúť ďalšie tri obete, kým detektív neodhalí šokujúce rodinné tajomstvo. A vrah prenasleduje aj Lukea. Dokáže Jackie odhaliť pravdu o jeho identite skôr, ako sa stanú s Lukeom jeho ďalšími obeťami?…
