Film podle autobiografického románu Christopha Isherwooda zachycuje spisovatelův život od roku 1931, kdy opouští matku s bratrem a na pozvání známého se vydává do Berlína, kde má neposedný Christopher slíbenou pestřejší gay scénu, než mu může nabídnout Londýn. Hledání lásky v hlavním městě Německa ale není s nastupujícím Hitlerovým režimem vůbec jednoduché.
