Edward Wain (Robert Towne), nešikovný vládny agent, je na stope gangstra Renza Capeta, ktorý pašuje Kubáncov a veľkú časť kubánskeho národného pokladu z Kuby. Renzo je prepojený na ľudí ako je Mary-Belle Monahanová, nechvalne známa gangsterská čubka, Happy Jack Monahan, jej tupý gangsterský brat a Pete Peterson junior, chuligánsky herec. Wain sa predstavuje ako Sparks Moran a Renzo ho prijme do svojich radov. Renzo zosnuje plán na "zostrojenie" morskej príšery, takže Kubánci mu dovolia zmeniť kurz. Podozrivá morská príšera mu umožní eliminovať niekoľkých Kubáncov a dostať sa bližšie k pokladu. No príšeru vymyslel už niekto predtým…
