Toto sci-fi staví na v Americe v 50tých a 60tých letech velmi oblíbeném tématu – nebezpečí války s hromadným použitím atomových zbraní. Film začíná v "den T. D.", neboli "Total Destruction Day". Pan Madisson se na tento den pečlivě připravoval a díky tomu se mu podařilo zachránit se ve svém domě spolu svojí dcerou Louise. V „chráněném údolí“, ve kterém dům stál, se zachránilo ještě dalších 5 lidí. Tato malá skupinka se musí vypořádat se snižujícími se zásobami jídla, nebezpečím ozáření, masožravými mutanty a i se sebou navzájem. Roger Corman svůj první sci-fi film natočil za 9 dní a s velmi omezeným rozpočtem.
