Rok 1989, Staten Island, New York. Drogovému dealerovi Gassovi Faraccimu telefonuje Everet Hatcher, domlouvají se na obchodě. Gass však považuje Evereta za udavače a na místo schůzky jede s tím, že ho zabije, i když mu to jeho bratranec Danelo Darcangelo vymlouvá. Everet je ve skutečnosti policista, člen protidrogové jednotky, jehož úkolem bylo pokusit se přes Gasse dostat k velkému bossovi Joemu Zannimu. Vražda policisty však mění situaci, protože dopadnout vraha kolegy je ambicí každého z členů protidrogové jednotky. Navíc Gass byl původně členem jejich útvaru, pak přeběhl na druhou stranu, stal se nejdříve narkomanem a pak překupníkem drog. Teď dobře ví, co ho čeká, proto se skrývá a neustále mění úkryty. Jeho život je ve velkém nebezpečí, vždyť po něm pátrají nejen policisté, chtějí ho dostat i jeho vlastní lidéFilm je vlastně rekonstrukcí skutečného zločinu na základě policejních záznamů a výpovědí zúčastněných osob.
