Historie gay a lesbického filmu je úzce spojena s tradičními hodnotami populární kultury dané doby. Pokud je film k těmto tradičním postojům v opozici, dokáže vystihnout důležité kulturní, sociální, či dokonce politické tendence, které se života gayů mnohdy týkaly. Do osmdesátých let minulého století se v rámci americké kultury gay a lesbické filmy objevovaly jen zřídka. Naopak dnes jsou queer filmy všude. Tento dokument mapuje vývoj gay a lesbického filmu od experimentálních snímků ve 40. a 50. letech přes filmy 80. let, jež tématizovaly problém AIDS, až k tzv. ”New Queer Cinema” 90. let a k dnešním filmařům.
