Fred MacMurray ako Jim Larsen sa neživí práve najpoctivejším spôsobom – vykráda banky. Jedného dňa jeho mladší brat nešťastnou náhodou zastrelí zamestnanca banky a sám príde o život. Jim si rýchlo chce zachrániť vlastnú kožu, pretože ho obvinili z vraždy. Podarí sa mu ujsť a pod novým menom Ray Kincaid zakotví v mestečku na hraniciach USA a Mexika. Ani tu však nenájde potrebný pokoj. Zaľúbi sa totiž do krásnej šerifovej sestry, vdovy Ellen Baileyovej. Skutočné starosti však začne mať od chvíle, keď zachráni šerifa Marka Rileyho pred smrťou, ale jeho samého chytia a zatvoria. Predsa len však zostáva iskrička nádeje, že neskončí na šibenici, pretože šerif, ktorému zachránil život, je súčasne aj právnikom a rozhodne sa mu pomôcť…
