Rok 1990, válka v Zálivu, Kuvajt je násilně obsazen iráckými jednotkami pod velením Saddáma Husajna, podle jehož slov tento malý kus Země právě "přestal existovat". Situace se vyostřuje, USA společně s dalšími státy spěchají na pomoc. Zhruba rok po vypuknutí konfliktu je nakonec operace k osvobození Kuvajtu "Pouštní bouře" rychlým procesem s Husajnovou rozpínavostí. Ten ale z posledních sil rozkazuje odvetu. Výsledkem je obrovská ekologická katastrofa v podobě téměř sedmi set hořících ropných vrtů na zdevastovaném kuvajtském území. Dokument FIRES OF KUWAIT (v distribuci uváděn také jako Operace Pouštní bouře – Hrdinové z Kuvajtu) popisuje události bezprostředně po skončení války, kdy se skupiny expertů i dobrovolníků z celého světa společně snažily různými způsoby uhasit hořící vrty a vrátit tak kuvajtskému nebi slunce.
