Sedmiletá Leslie je při cestě ze školy unesena dvojicí mužů, kteří jí namluvili, že byli požádáni jejími rodiči, aby se o ni postarali. Odvezli ji na neznámé místo, kde se setkala s černošským sirotkem Donniem. Po čase Leslie uvěřila, že rodiče už o ni nemají zájem a nechtějí, aby se vrátila domů. Obě děti zůstaly v rukou pedofilních únosců a musely se podvolit i požadavkům jejich zvrhlých „zákazníků“. Leslie s Donniem spojilo vzájemné až sourozenecké pouto a společně utíkali do svého tajného světa, který si vytvořili při čtení Knihy džunglí. Pak se příběh posune o deset let dopředu, kdy oba, již na prahu dospělosti, žijí na ulici, živí se tím jediným, co se v životě naučili, a přitom se stále starají jeden o druhého. Jednoho dne je však Leslie postavena před fakt, že její rodiče stále žijí a ona by se mohla vrátit domů.
