Odcudzená rodina zistí, že na to, aby pochopila svoju minulosť, sa s ňou musí najprv vyrovnať. Starý muž sa tak napokon dožije aj toho, že mu ktosi po prvý krát v živote povie "starý otec". 80 ročný Bert Riley ( Ernest Borgnine ) je starým filmovým spevákom, ktorý sa už stiahol zo šoubiznisu, ale nežije so svojou dcérou a vnučkou Beccou. Bert sa už rozhodne, že predá svoj dom a presťahuje sa do starobinca, lenže zrazu sa musí postarať o Beccu, lebo jej mamu odvezú do nemocnice. Chodí s ňou každý deň do školy a pomaly zisťuje, že si s ňou rozumie…
