Mladý a neklidný Nick Adams, jediný syn despotické matky a slabého, ale důstojného otce – lékaře, opustí svůj venkovský domov v Michiganu, aby se vydal na vzrušující cestu. Poté, co nedokázal získat práci reportéra v New Yorku, nastoupí během První světové války do italského vojska jako řidič záchranné služby. Zde si získá spoustu přátel mezi kolegy a zde se také narodí romance mezi ním a zdravotní sestrou.
