Edmond Bancroft je nadaný a velice úspěšný autor knih s kriminální a hororovou tématikou, který dokáže ve svých povídkách nenapodobitelně zachytit nejjemnější detaily zločinu a popsat je s mrazící přesností, tolik přitahující masy čtenářů. Nikdo však netuší, že za podivnými vraždami mladých dívek, ke kterým v poslední době dochází, stojí Bancroftova touha po inspiraci a jeho posedlost vražednými nástroji pečlivě uspořádávanými v soukromém sklepním Černém muzeu.
