Dva roky po tragické smrti Jamese Deana o něm tehdy ještě začínající režisér Robert Altman natočil to, co on sám nazýval "the different kind of motion picture" – jiný druh filmu. Tento z části hraný dokument mapuje velice citlivě Deanův život, pomáhá si rozhovory s jeho rodinou, přáteli i spolupracovníky, ale přesto se z něj nestává jen komentovaný rozhovor. Robert Altman se totiž vydal cestou, kdy chytře spojuje Deanův život a postavy, které ztvárnil, a prohlubuje tím málo známá fakta z jeho života.
