Toto je jeden z mála filmů, kde název úplně vystihuje i jeho obsah. Nedozvíme se to, jak Janis vyrůstala, ani jak zemřela, ale tu pravou podstatu věci – to, jaká byla (The Way She Was). Tento dokument je chronologicky řazený sestřih živých písní a rozhovorů, a právě hudba a slova dokážou nejlépe popsat osobnost Janis Joplin.
