13-ročný chlapec zostáva sám v divočine, aby strážil pôdu, kde si chce jeho rodina vybudovať farmu. Týždne čakania na otca sa však menia na mesiace, mesiace na ročné obdobia, a nikto neprichádza, pretože rodinu zdržiava nielen zlé počasie, ale aj smrteľné choroby. Mattove šance na prežitie v divočine sú čoraz menšie, chlapec však chce dodržať sľub, že pôdu ustráži. Zachránia ho penobscotskí Indiáni, ktorí ho naučia ako prežiť, ale dajú mu aj lekcie o dôvere, priateľstve a nádeji…
