Na svatební cestě po Evropě se novomanželům Geraldu a Marianne Harcourtovým porouchá automobil. Jsou proto nuceni neplánovaně zastavit v malé zapadlé vísce a ubytovat se v opuštěném hotelu, jehož majitel už léta neměl žádného zákazníka. Příjezd mladého páru ovšem neunikne něčí pozornosti a do hotelu brzy přijíždí kočár s pozvánkou na večeři v blízkém zámku. Dr. Ravna, pán zdejšího panství, se zdá být okouzlen půvaby mladičké Marriane. Jeho pomoc s opravou automobilu však není tak úplně nezištná a sobotní maškarní bál se pro oba manžele mění v boj o vlastní existenci.
