Do popředí Jarmanovy dobové kritiky vyvstávají průvodní jevy krize anglické společnosti – drogy, pouliční nepokoje, terorismus a všeobecný morální úpadek. Film nese název podle obrazu Forda Maxe Browna z roku 1855 zachycujícího dvojici britských uprchlíků opouštějících Anglii během největší vlny emigrace v 19. století.
