Emilia Greenleaf (Natalie portman) je advokátka žijící v New Yorku se svým manželem Johnem Wolfem a jeho nevlastním čtyřletým synem Williamem, který je pozoruhodně inteligentní. William tráví mnoho času u své matky, lékařky Carolyn Soule (Lisa Kudrow). Vztah Emilie a Williama není zrovna na dobré úrovni, jelikož vyjde najevo, že poměr jeho otce s ní začal, ještě když byl ženatý s chlapcovou matkou. Emilia však otěhotní a porodí holčičku Isabel. Ta ale náhle zemře přímo při krmení.Převážná část snímku se poté zabývá Isabelinou smrtí, která má i neblahé účinky jak na Emiliino manželství s Johnem, tak i na její vztah k malému Williamovi (již na počátku příběhu popisuje jejich vztah jako "nesnesitelný"), ale snaží se mu být dobrou matkou. Tomu však brání i skutečnost, že William slouží své pravé matce Carolyn jako "mluvčí" a na povrch se tak někdy dostávají až přehnané poznatky o způsobu Isabeliiny smrti…
