Mladík Jack Sweeny (James Marshall) by sa chcel zamestnať v banke, ale príliš sa mu to nedarí kvôli jeho kriminálnej minulosti. Po jednom neúspešnom pohovore sa nedobrovoľne stane účastníkom prestrelky medzi políciou a mafiou. Z miesta činu ukradne kufrík s platničkami na falšovanie bankoviek. Drahocenný úlovok by najradšej ihneď výhodne predal, preto požiada o pomoc kamaráta Zippa (Michael Madsen). Mafiánsky boss Giani Ponti (Dennis Hopper) a jeho poskok Carlo (Eric Roberts) sú mu však v pätách, podobne ako aj fanatický policajt Max Fenton (William Forsythe), ktorý chce s kriminálnikmi spraviť krátky proces.
