Celých päť rokov žila v prístave dediny na vancouverskom ostrove kosatka dravá, ktorú milovala celá miestna komunita až do jej tragickej smrti. Osirelá kosatka sa stane stredobodom duchovného a politického sporu, keď sa usídli v prístave kanadského mestečka. Okamžite je senzáciou a novinári jej dajú meno Luna. Veľryba priateľsky vychádza s ľuďmi a miestny indiánsky kmeň je presvedčený, že sa do nej prevtelil duch ich veľkého náčelníka, ktorý nedávno zomrel. Vláda však plánuje Lunu premiestniť na šíre more, aby sa spojila so svojím stádom, ale Indiáni s tým nesúhlasia a protestujú. Napokon sa odcudzený syn mŕtveho náčelníka, Mike Maquinna, rozhodne vrátiť ku kmeňu a bojovať za to, aby kosatka zostala tam, kde sama chce.
