Vyhlášený rozdávač karet Frankie Machine (Frank Sinatra) se vrací po půlročním pobytu ve vězení, kde se zároveň léčil ze své závislosti na tvrdých drogách. Doma už na něj netrpělivě čeká jeho manželka Zosch, po automobilové havárii trvale upoutaná na invalidní vozík, bývalá milenka Molly (Kim Novak), a také spousta kamarádů ze starých časů. Frankie ale za žádnou cenu nechce znovu spadnout do drog, snaží se začít žít jinak, usiluje o místo bubeníka velké kapely, s kartami a svou minulostí už nechce mít nic společného. Drogový dealer Louie má na to ale jiný názor…
