Malajské ostrovy: kapitán Lingard (Ralph Richardson) zcela ovládá obchod s domorodci, neboť pouze on se dokonale vyzná ve zdejších nebezpečných vodách. Přijímá na palubu Angličana Petera Willemse (Trevor Howard). Lingard však ani netuší, co se ve skutečnosti za Willemsovými úmysly skrývá: samozřejmě jde o tajnou vodní cestu… Mistrovské zfilmování slavného románu Josepha Conrada od režiséra slavného THE THIRD MAN.
