Za svůj vztah k vdané ženě je mladý Jonathan Standish odsouzen soudním tribunálem své vystěhovalecké osady a na patnáct let poslán na galeje. Podaří se mu odtud uprchnout, na útěku ale padne do rukou pirátům, toužícím získat velký poklad, který je podle legendy ukryt v Jonathanově vesnici. Standish je proto nucen dělat pirátům průvodce výměnou za svůj život a slib bezúhonnosti pro osadu. Jonathanův otec, zvolený vůdce osadníků, ale tvrdí, že poklad neexistuje. Piráti však bez něj neodejdou.
