Pes Liberty, jehož myšlenky jsme schopni slyšet, je první pes v Americe. Je to totiž prezidentův pes. Přirozeně, že musí být vychovaný, má však nejen své povinnosti, ale i dost privilegií, které z něho dělají snoba, ale na druhou stranu blahosklonného psa oproti jiným psům. Jednoho dne ho malý Nate vezme na procházku. V té době je prezident na své pravidelné rozcvičce v parku, spolu s ním běhá nejen ochranka, ale i novináři, kteří si ho chtějí vyfotografovat a zeptat se ho na pár všetečných otázek. Z ničeho nic se tam objeví ztracený pes Moocher, který utekl z útulku a právě on způsobí neskutečný rozruch a hotovou pohromu. Když z hydrantu začne stříkat voda, ochranka prezidenta srazí k zemi a doslova ho zalehnou, aby ho ochránili. Vzápětí se snaží psa chytit, ale v té mele dojde k nečekané situaci: prezidentovi muži chytí nesprávného psa a strážník z útulku si také odvede jiného psa. Oba psi si jsou navlas podobní. Liberty se tedy dostává do psího útulku a přesně tak stejně vypadající ztracený pes Moocher se dostává do Bílého domu. A tím vše začíná…
