Expistolník Steve Sinclair (Robert Taylor) si srovnal v hlavě svůj život a rozhodl se žít v klidu a míru jako rančer. Vše se ale mění ve chvíli, kdy se na farmu vrací jeho mladší bratr Tony (John Cassavetes) a přivádí s sebou svoji snoubenku Joan Blake (Julie London). Duševně nevyrovnaný a impulzivní Tony není schopen se srovnat se svým životem ve stínu "velkého" bratra pistolníka, kterému se chce za každou cenu vyrovnat, proto obrátí život na ruby nejenom bratrovi, ale celému údolí.
