Klasický film noir chandlerovského stylu, kdy se po válce vrací z nemocnice voják trpící totální amnézií, jehož jméno je prý George Taylor (John Hodiak). Jen jediná stopa ho může přivést na stopu nejen této záhady, a tou je dopis od neznámého člověka jménem Larry Cravat. Samozřejmě se potká na cestě s femme fatale (Nancy Guild) a bandou podivínů, kteří chtějí něco, o čem by měl vědět.
