Patrik, syn anglického vyberača daní pre upadajúcu Rímsku ríšu, je unesený írskymi pirátmi do írskeho otroctva na šesť rokov. Tvrdý írsky život ho privedie ku kresťanskej viere a s jej pomocou prekoná všetky prekážky. Podarí sa mu utiecť z otroctva a po návrate do Anglicka sa prihlási na učenie do kláštora. Po ukončení štúdia je vyhlásený za írskeho biskupa, kedže ho viera stále ťahala do tohto kraja. Podarí sa mu previesť pohanskými rituálmi vychovávaný írsky národ na kresťanskú vieru?
