Americký snímek natočený dle skutečné události, jež byla rovněž zpracována v knižní podobě, se odehrává na současném iránském venkově a vypráví příběh tří lidí: mladé Sorayi M., jež je vlastním manželem křivě a vypočítavě obviněna z cizoložství, za což jí hrozí smrt ukamenováním; její tety Zahry, emancipované ženy, která netouží po ničem menším, než po tom aby se svět dozvěděl pravdu o lidských právech a právech žen v ortodoxní islámské společnosti; a konečně francouzského žurnalisty a válečného dopisovatele Freidoune Sahebjama (James Caviezel), který se bez vlastního přičinění stává mužem, který věděl příliš mnoho.
