James Stewart v roli Monty Strattona, baseballového hráče Chicago White Sox. Ten si v roce 1938 při nehodě na lovu omylem prostřelil nohu a museli mu ji nad kolenem amputovat. Díky podpoře své milované manželky (kterou Jamesovi už potřetí ztvárnila June Allyson) a jeho kamarádům se pokusí i přes svůj hendikep o návrat.
