Zpustošenou krajinou se potlouká tulák (Kevin Costner) se svým mezkem. Na živobytí si vydělává přednesem Shakespearových dramat. Při jednom z jeho vystoupení je proti své vůli zrekrutován do Bethlehemovy armády. Z "přijímače" se mu podaří uniknout a aby při útěku nezmrznul, "půjčí" si z náhodně nalezené kostry pošťáckou uniformu. S cílem zůstat naživu přichází do městečka Pineview a tvrdí, že je skutečným poštovním úředníkem obnovené vlády Spojených Států…
