Starý mořský vlk Tommy Tyler (John Mills) vesele brázdí karibská moře na své plachetnici. On i jeho dospívající dcera Spring (Hayley Mills) se vcelku úspěšně živí příležitostným žebráním při setkáních s luxusními loděmi zbohatlíků, při kterých vždy sehrávají naučenou roli vyčerpaných a na smrt vyhladovělých trosečníků. Jednou pozvou k sobě na loď znuděného synovce milionáře, čerstvě vystudovaného právníka Williama Ashtona (James MacArthur). Tommy chová k Ashtonovi sympatie, a tak mu brzy prozradí tajemství o staré mapě a zakopaném pokladu. A právě kvůli pokladu teď všechny tři čekají nebezpečná střetnutí s několika bezohlednými piráty.
