Harriman Nelson, profesor a admirál v jedné osobě, před několika dny dokončil výstavbu své supermoderní ponorky. První testovací plavba ale musí být přerušena, neboť několik meteoritů zapálilo tzv. Van Allenovy radiační pásy kolem Země. Teplota na povrchu planety nezadržitelně stoupá. S řešením přichází právě profesor Nelson: má něco přes 10 dní, aby se svojí ponorkou přeplavil přes půlku Země a v přesně stanovený čas vypálil do hořícího pásu jadernou raketu. Nelson proto nemešká a ihned se vydává na cestu…
