Annin príbeh pokračuje. Na pozvanie snúbenca Gilberta prichádza do New Yorku, kde sa Gibert uchádza o prácu v nemocnici. Všetko vyzerá tak nádejne a bezstarostne, ale život nie je iba o šťastí a oboch na ich spoločnej ceste životom stretne dezilúzia. Gilbert krátko na to podlieha tlaku a odhádza bojovať do Európy. Na starom kontinente zúri prvá svetová vojna a aj keď Anna zostáva v pozadí a publikuje, po strate kontaktu odchádza do bojov zmietaného kontinentu, aby opäť našla svoju nezvestnú lásku…
