Píše se konec 19. století a v New Orleans vyrůstá kluk jménem Jeff Lambert. Jeho otec si potrpí na vážnou hudbu a nechává synovi platit lekce klarinetu, Jeffa to ale od klasiky táhne spíš k černošské Basin Street, kde se po večerech hraje jazz. O několik let později je z Jeffa už dospělý muž, láska k "pokleslé hudbě", jak je tento žánr americkou smetánkou nazýván, ho ale neopustila. Dává dohromady první jazzovou skupinu tvořenou výhradně bělochy a je odhodlán udělat téměř cokoliv, aby Amerika začala tento původně černošský styl respektovat.
