Od smrti milionára Cyrusa Normana uplynulo 10 rokov. Jeho splnomocnenec Cosby (George Zucco) zvolal šiestich pozostalých do Cyrusovho sídla v New Orleans, aby si vypočuli poslednú vôľu zosnulého. Na sklamanie ostatných je Joyce (Paulette Goddard) jedinou dedičkou, no kvôli príznakom šialenstva v rodine bol napísaný aj druhý závet v prípade, ak šialenstvu podľahne aj Joyce. To pre ňu znamená nebezpečenstvo. Náhle sa objaví Cyrusova slúžka pani Lu (Gale Sondergaard) a oznámi im, že duchovia jej povedali o jednom úmrtí cez nadchádzajúcu noc. Následne ich varuje Hendrick (John Wray), strážca z neďalekého väzenia, že utiekol vraždiaci maniak zvaný "Mačka". Pre Cyrusových pozostalých to všetko znamená noc plnú vrážd, záhad a intríg…
