Říká se jí Stará dáma z Threadneedle Street nebo také jen Stará dáma. Bank of England, centrální banka Velké Británie, má tradici sahající až do sedmnáctého století a mezi její adjektiva patřilo odjakživa také slůvko nedobytná. Jako taková byla pochopitelně i velkým lákadlem pro zloděje. Náš příběh z počátku století, kdy v Londýně ještě jezdily drožky tažené koňmi, začíná příjezdem amerického důlního inženýra Norgatea, nové posily týmu sestaveného stoupenci Irské republikánské armády. Jejich misí je vykrást Bank of England a získané zlato použít ve prospěch IRA. Mimořádně obtížný úkol si ovšem žádá mimořádnou přípravu. Při skládání informací poodhalujících slabé místo v bezpečnosti banky však za sebou skupina nevědomky nechává stopy, po kterých se vydá ambiciózní šéf bankovní stráže kapitán Fitch (Peter O'Toole).
