Film je inspirován životem jednoho z nejhrůznějších sériových vrahů. Ed Gein žil na farmě u Plainfieldu ve Wisconsinu. Z počátku vykrádal čerstvé hroby a experimentoval s mrtvými těly. Dopouštěl se i nekrofilie. Postupně odhalil svou touhu stát se ženou. Operaci pohlaví tehdy ještě medicína nedovolovala, tak si začal šít obleky z ženských kůží. Netrvalo to dlouho a Ed začal vraždit a konzumovat postarší ženy z okolí. Z jejich ostatků si vyráběl doplňky do domu. Tento sériový vrah byl inspirací pro spoustu filmů jako např. Psycho (1960), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) a The Silence Of The Lambs (1992). Skupina Slayer o něm dokonce složila píseň pod názvem Dead Skin Mask.
