Idealistický Maďar János Szabó (Peter Lorre) přijíždí do New Yorku, nedočkavý splnit si svůj "americký sen." V jeho hotelu ale hned první den vypukne požár, při kterém si János vážně popálí obličej. Takto znetvořený nemůže najít práci a společnost ho zavrhne. Okolnosti ho nakonec donutí nastoupit dráhu zločinu. Jenže potom potká slepou Helen (Evelyn Keyes).
