Sam Marlowe cestuje do Ameriky přesvědčit svou zazobanou tetu, aby pronajala letní dům v Anglii. Přijíždí k ní zrovinka v době, kdy se jeho bratránek Eustace hodlá bez vědomí matky oženit. Rázná paní Hignettová však učiní synovým snahám o vstup do chomoutu rázný konec, když mu v den svatby zabaví všechny obleky a oba bratranci jsou ihned posláni zpět do Anglie. Na palubě lodi se Sam seznámí s Eustaceho bývalou snoubenkou, roztomilou fiflenkou Billie Bennettovou. Eustace o její přítomnosti neví a vychytralý Sam si tak s bratrancovou pomocí získá její sympatie. Avšak udržet si takto atraktivní a v lásce nestálou dívku stojí moc práce a intrikaření.
