V roku 1899 sa newyorská mladá pisárka Francis Ella Fitzová, pochádzajúce z lepšej spoločnosti, rozhodne aj proti vôli svojej matky odísť na Aljašku, kde práve vypukla zlatá horúčka. Dostane sa do partie šiestich mužov rôzneho veku a profesií z celých Spojených štátov, ktorí nie sú prítomnosťou ženy práve nadšení. Už na lodi a neskôr aj cestou musia prekonávať množstvo prekážok i smrteľné nebezpečenstvá, ktoré z nich nakoniec urobia dobrých priateľov. Fizzy potom začne pracovať v kancelárii, aby zarobila pre seba aj pre chlapcov nejaké peniaze a mohli sa postaviť na vlastné nohy. Náhodou tam narazí na doklad o zlatonosnom pozemku, ktorý si nikto nevšimol, a tak si ho dá zaregistrovať na svoje meno. Po doriešení finančných záväzkov sa pustí spoločne s kamarátmi do ryžovania…
