Lewis Tyler (Jeff Bridges) ctižádostivý spisovatel třicátých let, se chce stát příštím Zanem Greyem nebo Peterem B. Kynem. Přijíždí do Nevady, aby vyhledal ústav pro dálkové studium, kde má promovat. Po studiu je přijat bandou darebáků jako uklízeč, poté narazí na ošumělý filmový spolek, který točí béčkové westerny. Získá práci od manažera spolku Kesslera (Alan Arkin), krátce nato se zamiluje do odvážné pomocnice scénáristy – slečny Trout (Blythe Danner). S pomocí popudlivého chlápka Howarda Pikea (Andy Griffith) se Lewis zbaví gaunerů ze školy, kteří chtějí peníze, které jim Lewis náhodně ukradl.
