Matt Howard (Cary Grant), přítel a ochránce Thomase Jeffersona, pracuje pro Fleetwooda Peytona (sir Cedric Hardwicke) a zamiluje se do jeho dcery Jane (Martha Scott). Jefferson ho povzbuzuje, aby vstoupil do politiky. Když začne hrozit válka, postaví se Howard na stranu kolonistů a vstoupí dobrovolně do armády, přestože ho Jane prosí, aby se nenechal zabít. Jdou tam s ním i jeho dva synové.
