Sir Anthony Ross (Donald Sinden) je trochu prudší a impulzivní muž, jenže kdo by se mu divil. Jeho syn Donald Ross (David Gwillim) se před několika lety ztratil v ledových pustinách severního pólu a od té doby o něm nikdo neslyšel. Jen jeho eskymácký průvodce Oomiak (Mako) se vrátil, ale z odvážného muže se během cesty stala bojácná troska. Sir Anthony dá dohromady záchrannou výpravu složenou z polárníka a badatele profesora Johna Ivarssona (David Hartman) a francouzského kapitána Brieux (Jacques Marin) s zeppelinem vlastní výroby a konstrukce. Podle Oomiakových instrukcí míří přímo do největšího mrazu severu. Jaké je však jejich překvapení, když uprostřed ledové pouště objeví sopečnou činností ohřívaný ráj, kde žijí poslední Vikingové. Ti se ale ze strachu před prozrazením svého území pokusí všechny zabít…
