Lewis Gates (Tom Berenger) se živí jako příležitostný lovec odměn ve státě Montana. Stopa tří uprchlých vězňů ho zavede hluboko do divočiny, až na pokraj málo prozkoumané oblasti Oxbow. Když se mu nedaří dostihnout uprchlíky, nachází podivnou věc – šíp, patřící bojovným indiánům kmene Čejenů, zvaných Psí bojovníci. Co dělá tento šíp dávno vyhynulého kmene uprostřed divočiny? A co se stalo se třemi uprchlými vězni? Na tyto hádanky se snaží Gates najít odpověď spolu s antropoložkou a odborníci na indiány Lillian Sloane (Barbara Hershey). Vydávají se do Oxbow zjistit pravdu o podivných událostech a možná i pravdu o sobě samých.
